HFGCS Sustainment Engineer
Position Title: HFGCS Sustainment Engineer
Department/Location: TIMS / Oklahoma City (Midtown)
Status: Regular / Full-Time Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The HFGCS Sustainment Engineer provides multidisciplinary civil, structural, and electrical engineering support focused on the continued operability, reliability, and lifecycle sustainment of High-Frequency Global Communications System (HFGCS) antenna sites and facilities. The position supports globally distributed, mission-critical HF communications infrastructure through preventive maintenance inspections (PMIs), condition assessments, corrective action planning, and sustainment execution, ensuring compliance with USAF, DoD, UFC, NEC, IEEE, and HFGCS engineering criteria.
Sustainment-Focused Responsibilities
Civil Engineering (Sustainment)
- Perform site condition assessments of HFGCS antenna locations, access roads, drainage, grading, and equipment pads
- Evaluate tower foundations, guy anchor foundations, and concrete structures for cracking, settlement, erosion, and long-term durability
- Support sustainment repairs including concrete restoration, soil stabilization, drainage corrections, and site hardening
- Review civil deficiencies identified during PMIs and develop engineered corrective action recommendations
- Support sustainment planning in remote, austere, and environmentally challenging locations
Structural Engineering (Sustainment)
- Perform structural condition evaluations of HFGCS antenna towers and support structures, including:
- LPH-89
- 120/60 HF vertical monopoles
- 1830DM and similar HF structures
- Assess towers for corrosion, fatigue, overstress, guy system condition, anchor integrity, and serviceability
- Support tower PMIs, including deficiency validation, risk ranking, and repair prioritization
- Develop repair, reinforcement, or component replacement recommendations to extend service life
- Provide engineering support for tower modifications, partial replacements, and controlled removals as part of sustainment actions
Electrical Engineering (Sustainment)
- Evaluate electrical power distribution systems supporting HFGCS transmitters, antennas, and shelters for continued reliability
- Review and maintain single-line diagrams (SLDs) and grounding documentation as part of as-maintained records
- Assess grounding, bonding, and lightning protection systems critical to HF performance and equipment protection
- Identify degraded, missing, or non-compliant grounding components and support grounding system remediation
- Support sustainment of transformers, generators, UPS systems, antenna power interfaces, and facility electrical systems
Grounding & Bonding Sustainment Oversight
- Verify long-term integrity of tower, guy, and facility grounding systems supporting HF operations
- Assess continuity, corrosion, and physical condition of ground rings, radials, counterpoise systems, and bonds
- Ensure grounding systems maintain low-impedance performance required for HF communications and lightning protection
- Support development of grounding repair scopes, material lists, and sustainment execution plans
Preventive Maintenance & Condition Assessment Support
- Support and execute HFGCS PMIs in accordance with contract requirements and USAF guidance
- Validate inspection findings and translate deficiencies into engineered sustainment actions
- Support development of deficiency logs, risk categorizations, and corrective action plans
- Provide technical input to repair prioritization, budget planning, and sustainment scheduling
- Support follow-up inspections to verify corrective actions and sustainment effectiveness
Integrated Sustainment & Program Support
- Provide on-site and remote engineering support for sustainment work execution
- Review contractor repair approaches, RFIs, and field conditions impacting sustainment scope
- Maintain and update as-maintained engineering documentation
- Coordinate with USAF Civil Engineering, CORs, system engineers, and OEM representatives
- Prepare sustainment reports, inspection summaries, technical memoranda, and engineering recommendations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Electrical Engineering
- 5–10 years’ experience supporting DoD infrastructure sustainment or mission-critical communications or electrical systems
- Demonstrated experience with antenna towers, grounding systems, or HF communications facilities
- Working knowledge of UFC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and USAF sustainment engineering criteria
- Ability to travel to CONUS and OCONUS HFGCS sites
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Prior experience supporting HFGCS or strategic HF communications sustainment programs
- Experience with PMIs, infrastructure condition assessments, and lifecycle sustainment planning
- Familiarity with USAF CE and NAVFAC sustainment processes
Clearance
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
