Extend is IETMs technology developed by Long Wave that allows for automatic updating of technical data via an XML platform. Extend provides leading technology for pure XML solutions and the flexibility for seamless integration into your current system. It allows you to use a single XML dataset as a 'database' of information and provides the ability to export out the data to Print (hardcopy), CD-ROM, Inter/Intranet and Wireless media. Update the XML and the updates flow automatically to each medium. No need to keep several versions of your data updated because this technology pulls all of its information from a single, source XML document.

Database XML Exporting
If you have data stored into a database, it is difficult to have an IETM connect to the database unless run from a server. Field personnel may not have an Internet connection at all times. This is where it is important to be able to have database information exported as static XML. A part of the extend technology is the ability to export database information into XML. We have the tools necessary to quickly and easily perform this on your particular database structure.

eXtensible Style Language Transformations (XSLT)
If you do not have the expertise to properly create XSLTs, Long Wave can provide this as a service. We are experts in creating style sheets to properly display and repurpose your data in an intuitive fashion, using XLink and XInclude, some of the newest and hottest methods available. We have the capability to create eXtensible Style Language Transformations to transform your XML to just about any format available.

The Difference
What makes Extend different is that it usually can merge seamlessly with your existing process. extend is made up from a culmination of our most popular products, AttEdit, Eclipse, Quick.SVG 2005 and Element, and placed in an integrated browser with a tabbed interface, using Internet Explorer technology to view the information. Since Internet Explorer is free, you can update your browser for free, but still maintain the easy-to-use interface the Extend browser provides.

Another difference is that Long Wave can also provide technology to provide your technical data to wireless and web-enabled devices, even voice technology. You only need to maintain one source XML document to reach all different media types: web, wireless, CD-ROM, paper, and voice. Author once, publish to many.

IETM Classes: A Primer
An Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) is all the information a technician needs to do his job: procedures, parts information and theory information loaded on a lightweight portable computer he can take with him to the machine to perform maintenance. Below is a list of DoD IETM Class Specifications:

  • Class 0 (Print or hardcopy) - Paper tech manuals with multiple volumes not linked or integrated. Maintainer uses table of contents or index for Data. High false-removal rates probable. Difficulty in updating or maintaining.
  • Class I/II - Page turners and scrolling documents with some indexing and hyperlinking. End-user searches for data. High false-removal rates probable.
  • Class III - SGML- or XML-tagged documents, some level of intelligence added, hyperlinking through linear structure. Maintainer searches for Data. High false removals rates probable.
  • Class IV - Authored directly to database for interactive electronic output, authored for maximum viewing ease. False removal rates non-existent, hierarchical structure.
  • Class V - IETM linked to or embedded in the equipment's operating system and/or maintenance network, integration with equipment diagnostics expedites. Troubleshooting, spares ordering and maintenance planning with increased equipment availability.

extend supports Class I thru IV IETMs, with emphasis on classes III through IV. Our Class III solution uses legacy SGML converted to XML with a context-sensitive search engine for quick and easy data retrieval.
